The staff for Studio Khara's new Shin Ultraman (New Ultraman) film announced on Tuesday that the upcoming "reconstruction" of the Ultraman franchise will release in early Summer 2021.
Director Shinji Higuchi, scriptwriter Hideaki Anno, and associate director Katsuro Onoue appeared at the opening ceremony of the Sukagawa Archive Center in Fukushima on Tuesday and made the announcement there. (Sukagawa was the birthplace of Eiji Tsuburaya, the "God of Tokusatsu.") The centre unveiled a 1/33-scale, roughly two-meter-tall statue of Shin Ultraman during the ceremony.
The film, written by Evangelion's Hideaki Anno and directed by Shin Godzilla's Shinji Higuchi, is said to have the same impact on the original Ultra series as Shin Godzilla did on updating the original Godzilla film for the modern era.
The cast for the film includes, Takumi Saitou, playing the main character, Masami Nagasawa, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Kōji Yamamoto, Tetsushi Tanaka,Daiki Arioka, Akari Hayami, Ryō Iwamatsu, Toshihiro Wada, Toru Matsuoka, Kyusaku Shimada, Keishi Nagatsuka, Hajime Yamazaki.
A draft of the script was completed on February 5, 2019, and Anno is focusing on the project after completing Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, Studio Khara's new Evangelion film. TOHO will distribute the Shin Ultraman film.
