Sentai Filmworks Bought Licenses Of New Initial D Film Trilogy!


After the success of Initial D trilogy produced by SANZIGEN Animation Studio and LIDEN FILMS; Sentai Filmworks, popular American anime licensing company based in Houston, Texas, recently announced that it has licensed the release of the new trilogy in America. The release date and promotional details of the film are yet to be announced.

The first film in the trilogy New Theatrical Movie Initial D Legend 1: Awakening (Shin Gekijō-ban Initial D Legend 1 -Kakusei-) opened in Japan in August 2014, the second film New Theatrical Movie Initial D Legend 2: Racer (Shin Gekijō-ban Initial D Legend 2 -Tōsō-) opened in May 2015, and the third film New Theatrical Movie Initial D Legend 3: Dream (Shin Gekijō-ban Initial D Legend 3 -Mugen-) opened in Japan February 2016.

The film is directed by Tomohito Naka along with Masamitsu Hidaka as chief director. Script of the film is written by Mayori Sekiima, while the character design is done by Koji Haneda. The music is composed by Akio Dobashi. The cast included Mamoru Miyano as Takumi Fujiwara, Daisuke Ono as Ryōsuke Takahashi, Yūichi Nakamura as Keisuke Takahashi, Maaya Uchida as Natsuki Mogi, Minoru Shiraishi as Itsuki Takeuchi, Junichi Suwabe as Takeshi Nakazato, and Hiroaki Hirata as Bunta Fujiwara.


The film trilogy is based on Shuuichi Shigeno's original street car-racing manga Initial D. It was serialised in Young Magazine from 1995 to 2013, with the chapters collected into 48 tankōbon volumes by Kodansha. The story focuses on the world of illegal Japanese street racing, where all the action is concentrated in the mountain passes and rarely in cities or urban areas, and with the drift racing style emphasized in particular.
