The official Twitter account of Studio Chizu announced on Tuesday that Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, The Boy and The Beast, Mirai) is working on a new anime film titled Belle (Ryū to Sobakasu no Hime, literally "The Princess of Dragons and Freckles"). The film will open in Japan in summer of 2021. Hosoda is directing and scripting the film and is also credited for the original work. The film will mark Studio Chizu's 10th anniversary. TOHO will be distributing the film.
The first concept visual for the film was released, depicting an online world called U, a place on the Internet where more than 5 billion people from around the world get together and the setting for the film.
This will be the third time Hosoda will have directed an anime film that depicts the internet, with the first two being Digimon: Our War Game in 2000, and 2009 hit anime film Summer Wars.
