Dr Stone Anime Review: A Fresh Take On A New World

Dr Stone Anime Review: A Fresh Take On A New World

Dr Stone is an anime for the ages. It has a unique story and at the same time is an educational anime. The story is immediately thrown in as the world ends and all of humanity is turned into stone. As humanity reverts back to the stone age, Senku and his friend has to re-discover and re-recreate the inventions and lead them back to the modern age.

I'll try to write it as spoiler-free and brief as possible so as not to ruin the excitement and amazement of the ones who has still not caught up with the anime.

Premise: It's been over 3,700 years since a mysterious flash of light petrified nearly all human life. A 16-year-old genius named Senkū Ishigami is suddenly revived to find himself in a world where all traces of human civilization have been eroded by time. Senkū sets up a base-camp and begins to study the petrified humans to determine the cause of the event, as well as a cure.

Review: As I've mentioned at the start, it has a unique story and its different from the overused anime genre we are all used to. It's a breath of fresh air to find an anime of this nature. The anime showed how much the human civilization had progressed but ultimately humans were their own downfall, and so begins the rebuilding of the civilization to its former self. We see the main character, Senku along with his companions, building the civilization back from the destruction with the power of science. We also see a difference in the ideology between Senku and Tsukasa. One wants to bring all of humanity who had turned to stone to life, and the other wants only the "pure-hearted young youths and live in a natural world owned by no one" so that the human civilization doesn't repeat the same mistake the corrupted adults did 3,700 years ago. Their ideology clashes and season one of the anime focuses on how to tackle each other with both forming their own empire, The Kingdom of Science vs The Empire of Might. Both parties had valid reasons to oppose each other's ideology on what is the righteous way and its what made the anime so great. You sometimes had to acknowledge Tsukasa's way of thinking and realise that what he's doing is for the good of the whole human society from that point onwards.

The characters in the anime are unique, in the sense that every important character has a different role to play and in turn, led to good character developments. The characters are given their own time to shine with their different personality. The chemistry between the characters blends well with the humour and brings out the entertainment aspect of the anime.

The visuals and the settings in the anime are above average and the quality doesn't drop which made for a great watch. The soundtrack and music scores bring a beautiful sense of serenity which meshes up well with the story setting.

What's Bad: The only negative thing to point out about this anime is that, despite being a shonen anime, there are little to no actual battle scenes. And the story progresses at a slow pace, which sometimes hinders the show.

Conclusion: Let's face it, it is hard to come up with creative ideas for a story and we see so much of the same concept done over and over again. Dr Stone is not one of those. It's a welcoming sight to see an anime which is different from all the anime out there. For some, the anime might also teach you the different aspects of the human civilization through inventions, and the progress human civilization has made from the stone age up to the current point. Its explores the magnificence of science without ever being dull or forced.

The anime is packed with an adequate amount of humour, action, emotions and logic.

I rate it a 4.5/5
