Demon Slayer: Kimitsu no Yaiba Film Rise to 5th in All-Time Highest Earning Film in Japan

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie Mugen Train has sold over 15 million tickets and has exceeded 20.4 billion yen (US$197.9 million) at the Japanese box office. It is now the fifth highest-earning film of all time in Japan, surpassing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's 20.3 billion yen total. It has also become the 3rd highest-grossing anime film at the Japanese Box office, surpassing Howl's Moving Castle.


The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba film has now earned more than Hayao Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle (at #7) and Princess Mononoke (#8). Only Spirited Away at #1, Titanic at #2, Frozen at #3, and your name. at #4 have earned more in Japan. The film is now below Makoto Shinkai's Your Name, which grossed 25.03 billion yen (US$242 million) over its box office run in Japan.


The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba film has also gone on to become the fastest film to gross over 20 billion yen at the Japanese box office, doing so in 24 days. To put it into perspective, the previous fastest film to reach the 20 billion yen mark was Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away which took 61 days.

Worldwide, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba film is currently the 9th highest-grossing film of 2020, just below DC's Birds of Prey film at US$201,858,461. In a few days, the anime film is set to overtake DC's Bird of Prey film.


On the worldwide highest-grossing anime film chart, Demon Slayer has overtaken Stand by Me Doraemon and Weathering with You to become the 5th biggest anime film of all time worldwide. With the anime film set to open around South-East Asian countries, the total gross is set to increase.


The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba film opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history.

The main staff members of the television anime returned for the sequel. LiSA returned to perform the film's theme song ”Homura" (Flame). TOHO and Aniplex are handling the film's distribution.
