Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Film Vaults to 10th in All-Time Highest Earning Film in Japan

The Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train anime film has sold a total of 11,891,254 tickets and earned a total of 15.799,365,450 billion yen (US$150.8 million) as of Sunday, its 17th day at the Japanese box office. The film is now ranked at #10 among all movies that ever opened in Japan (including foreign films), moving James Cameron's Avatar to #11 with its 15.6 billion yen (US$148.9 million) gross.


Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train is now the fifth anime film on the top 10, after Spirited Away (at #1), your name. (#4), Howl's Moving Castle (#6), and Princess Mononoke (#7). The film ranks just above Ponyo and Weathering With You, at #12 and #13, respectively.


The total tickets sold for the anime film surpassed Avatar's 10.10 million tickets sold and even surpasses Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which sold 11 million tickets. With this many tickets sold, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is the 15th most attended film of all time in Japan, just behind Toho's 1962 film King Kong vs. Godzilla at 12.55 million tickets sold.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history. The film sold 3,424,930 tickets and earned 4,623,117,450 yen (about US$43.85 million) in Japan in its first three days, for the highest weekday opening and the highest opening weekend ever in Japan. The film also crossed the 10 billion yen mark in just 10 days, which made it the fastest film to do so in Japanese box office history. It surpassed Spirited Away's 19-year record of being the fastest film to reach 10 billion yen. Spirited away reached the mark in 25 days. Your Name reached in 28 days, and Weathering With You reached in 34 days.


The main staff members of the television anime returned for the sequel. LiSA returned to perform the film's theme song ”Homura" (Flame). TOHO and Aniplex are handling the film's distribution.
